Shantiniketan is famous place in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, the place is famous for Visva-Bharati University which was founded by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. 

How to Reach: Nearest railway station is Bolpur station which is connected with Howrah and Sealdah the two major station of Kolkata. Also, Kolkata and Durgapur are the nearest airports from there you can book cab to travel to Shantiniketan. It will take around 3-3.5 hours.

Best time to visit: As usual summer (April to June) and rainy season (July-September Mid) should be avoidable. Rest of the time is the best to visit there.

Place to stay: There are quite good number of hotels available there. Also you can stay at West Bengal tourist lodge. 

Plan your visit: 1 or 2 days of stay is sufficient here. You can book a small battery car (Called Toto locally) and visit all the places in Shantiniketan. There are houses of renowned artists, writer in that locality. Nobel laureate Amartya Sen was living there. Getting engage with the culture and heredity of the Visva-Bharati University will make you close to the Bengal culture as well.
In the afternoon you can visit Khoai Haat (Market). Collection of handmade sarees, cloth jewelry, cloths, sculptures and many things are available in this market. Apart from buying those heritage there are lots to enjoy under the clear sky and surrounded greenery.
